A small automation with a big responsibility

Detecting a play button is only the beginning. Deciding when to click is the harder part.

The practical problem

CCTV Playback Helper looks for play-button icons in iVMS-4200 camera views. It uses Python and image matching to locate the buttons, with a small control window for starting, stopping, and adjusting the helper. A saved screenshot can also be analysed without interacting with a live camera window.

One action, then a check

The documented automation clicks one button at a time. It then waits for two checks in which that button is absent before considering another. If it cannot confirm disappearance within the allowed period, it stops. This is a useful pattern: act, observe the result, and only then continue.

What a signal can and cannot tell us

A button disappearing does not prove that a camera stream is healthy. The helper is calibrated for a particular four-camera layout and icon size. A different display scale or interface can change what it sees. Those boundaries matter as much as the detection itself.

Where the work stands

The repository includes Windows packaging configuration and desktop shortcut setup. Its documentation still marks packaged-app testing as pending, and contains differing notes about live clicking validation. I would treat that behaviour as requiring a fresh Windows check before release. The broader lesson is simple: a tool should communicate its limits as clearly as its capabilities.
